Starbooks Cafe
Book Tags
I started this project by making a list of popular coffee drinks and using the descriptions for each to make general statements with blanks. After I gathered nonfiction and biography titles, I used the descriptions on the backs of the books to match the themes and topics with the popular drinks and fill in the blanks.
After printing the tags in color, I cut out green cardstock and glued the tags to each square. Then, I hot glued paperclips to the back of the tags so they would stick out of the top of the pages.
The tags can also be used as bookmarks.
A memoir is a biographical account or essay written from personal knowledge.
A six-word memoir is a reflection of how you feel about a topic, a passion you have, advice to yourself, a funny thing that has happened to you, your personal mantra, issues that impact you, etc..
Examples:
A. Danced in fields of infinite possibilities.
B. Followed rules, not dreams. Never again.
C. Laughed at all the wrong moments.
D. I live the perfect imperfect life.
E. He left. Mom cried. Rollercoaster ride.
F. I colored outside of the lines.
G. Never really finished anything - besides cake.
Steps for Writing Your Own Six-Word Memoir
1. Create a list of words and phrases that describe you, your current life, or your past. Consider important moments in your life, goals and the characteristics that make you unique.
2. Circle the words and phrases that speak to you the most.
3. Now imagine an image representing these words. What meaning does it hold? What story does it tell?
4. Narrow your story down to 6 words.
5. Complete the fields below with your Six-Word Memoir in the last text box.
**The best 6-word memoirs will be displayed at our March 2nd Book Swap (during lunch in the courtyard by building 1), with the top memoirs earning Starbucks gift cards. Best of luck to you and your friends!
The Banner
My new obsession is using cardstock and foam sticker dots to make 3D banners. Here is the Circut Design Space project link for the banner we made to recognize our 6-word memoir contest winners. We use magnetic clips to hang the banner on the metal double door by our courtyard display.
Team Aprons
Some months we make shirts to wear for the Book Swaps. For example, in November we wore shirts that read, “Thankful for Books.” This month, we decided to embrace the barista look, ordered aprons from Amazon, and used Cricut Design Space link to cut out and apply our Starbooks Cafe logo with heat transfer vinyl.
Team Name Tags
The week of our book swap a colleague came in with a special surprise. She had ordered name tags from Amazon to be worn with the aprons. Here is the Cricut Design Space project link.
Overall, the Starbooks Cafe event was a hit. Students loved the coffee theme and we almost ran out of books again.
